Mercer Street in SoHo has become the go-to destination for luxury brand flagship stores (Prada, Balenciaga
and Saint Laurent share a block). The latest boutique to add its haute vibe to this short stretch of land in Manhattan
is none other than Versace. With her platinum blond hair, donning an all black (Versace, of course) ensemble in the
new brand space, Donatella Versace explained her choice of location today in a walk-through of the space for press, "I love being in SoHo. I like the attitude of people, how they dress, and I think it's a very exciting part of the city.
I used to come here with my brother Gianni. It was my dream to have a store in SoHo."Famed English architect
Jamie Fabert, who had previously worked on one the brand's stores in China, came up with the concept for the1,785-square-foot space that blends together the opulence of the past and the brand's future. "I like the combination of all the materials like gold, plexi glass and the antique mosaic. So it's like heritage and the future above it, but they never touch each other." explained Versace.
The centerpiece of the store is the aforementioned fragmented marble floor mosaic made and brought from Italy. Above it hovers curving plexi glass with golden details."This is a very specific kind of floor made in Italy in the 9th century. It is made from fragments of ruined temples in churches\all across Italy by one family. We wanted to create something which was deeply Italian, something that's rich in materials, something reminiscent of the opulence of Gianni," added Fabert.
